Advice for parents and the family - Nain a Taid

Grandparents

If you are grandparents, you can give your children a hand in raising their children bilingually.  There are many cases in Wales where grandparents help to pass the Welsh language on to their grandchildren in mixed-language homes.

Here are a few ideas on how you can help your family to pass the Welsh language on to your grandchildren:

  • Always speak Welsh with your grandchildren
  • Sing Welsh nursery rhymes with the children
  • Listen to Welsh CDs in the house or when travelling in the car with the children
  • Play games in Welsh
  • Read Welsh books with your grandchildren.  There are plenty available in your local library
  • Attend Welsh language events with your grandchildren.

If you would like to hear other families' stories, click on the Publications box on the right to read about Grandparents talk where Brenda Jones explains how she's helping to pass the Welsh language on to her grandson.
